BBC Breakfast Mother’s Day Video

Chris McGuire lost his mum when he was 20

For some Mother’s Day can be a difficult day, as it reminds them of what they’ve lost. For Out of Depth Dad blogger Chris McGuire, who lost his mum when he was 20, it wasn’t until the birth of his own son that he was able to find a way to celebrate the day again.

“TV presenter Declan Donnelly is, as always, right. “No one tells you how hard being a parent is! We could have had a warning! It’s literally the hardest thing ever I’ve done, but I’m loving it!” he said recently when interviewed about his new parenting status. Well said Dec! I totally agree! Parenting is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, too! Nothing even comes close. I’m serious. Brain surgery, fiddling with Rubik’s Cubes, enduring a minute in Gemma Collins’ presence – I’m sure they’re all a breeze compared to parenting.” My latest for @dailymirror - this time praising #DeclanDonnelly @antanddec for being honest about how hard parenting really is! #antanddec #themirror #parenting #outofdepthdad #dadlife #newspaper #newdad #advice #dadblogger https://outofdepthdad.com/2019/02/06/dad-blogger-praises-dec-donnelly-for-sharing-the-secret-parents-never-tell-you-mirror-online/
Published by @goodmenproject - have you seen my “Ten lessons I learned at my son’s first birthday party” Have a read. #1stBirthday #dadlife #fatherhood #outofdepthdad #parenting #party #advice “1: The party is not for the child. It’s for the adults who’ve survived a year with a child. Rather than being called a ‘Birthday Party’ it should be named a ’365 days without accidentally damaging your baby party’.” https://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/ten-lessons-i-learned-at-my-sons-first-birthday-party/
My latest piece for @metro.co.uk “As parents, you really can’t win! The truth is, in the vast majority of cases, parents only allow screen time to be the WD40 of their day – it oils the wheels during periods where other essential activities are taking place – distracting mum or dads attention. Yes, in the past there were no screens, I get that. But the past wasn’t always as ideal as some people choose to remember – it was also a place where unattended babies in buggies were dumped outside shops and tots were left to ‘cry it out’ in their prams out of earshot (at the bottom of the garden). The world’s changed – not all of it for the worst” #parenting #metrouk #dad #writer #outofdepthdad #columnist #fatherhood #screentime #tech #debate #ipad https://metro.co.uk/2019/02/04/i-wont-take-the-ipad-off-my-toddler-its-a-great-parenting-tool-8430948/
Great to be featured in the #new #parenting site @masandpas There’s loads of great content on there! Take a look! “You’re at that point in a computer game, the one where you think you’ve nearly finished. You’ve mastered the gameplay, you know all the little tricks and strategies that lowly beginners miss. You’re feeling pretty smug, then suddenly – rather than being congratulated for completing the game – a big ‘Level TWO’ sign drops into view! Within moments you discover that ‘Level TWO’ is much harder than ‘Level ONE’. This isn’t a game anymore.” #dadlife #masandpaa #daddy #secondchild #outofdepthdad #leveltwo #videogame #newspapercolumnist #parentingsite #mums #fatherhood #newbaby https://www.masandpas.com/2019/02/welcome-to-level-two-life-with-the-arrival-of-baby-number-2/
Great to be invited back to chat with #SallyFairfax on @bbcradiohumberside again today. This time we were discussing #RussellBrand’s views on parenting. “I smell poo everywhere. Poo is a big part of my life these days (not my own). Sam’s mum and I talk about little else: “Did he poo this morning?” “A little.” “How little’s little?” “Cadbury’s Creme Egg sized.” “OK. What color?” “Brown.” “Dark brown or sandy?” You get the idea. I’m constantly sniffing the air to see if a nappy needs changing or (God forbid) a leakage has occurred. They say that Queen thinks the world smells of fresh paint, which must be awful. Wet paint gives me a headache. For me, I’m sure the entire world smells of poo. I have poo tinnitus. I’m not sure if ‘poo tinnitus’ is a ‘thing’, but if it’s not it should be!” Here’s my piece on what I didn’t expect from fatherhood - published by @goodmenproject #father #fatherhood #parenting #dad #newdad #advice #parentingadvice #poo #tinnitus #funny #outofdepthdad https://outofdepthdad.com/2019/01/28/five-things-i-didnt-expect-from-fatherhood-the-good-men-project/

5 Things I Didn’t Expect From Fatherhood…

I’m the first to admit that I was quite naive going into this whole ‘parenting thing’. I really was. I genuinely thought my days would be just as they were before, with a few nappy changes and the occasional bottle feed. How dumb was I? The answer is pretty dumb – almost Donald Trump levels of […]
